Cyber Patrol Unearths Fabricated Lavrov Clip in Bhushan Post
Online investigators in Delhi have opened a formal probe into the distribution of a tampered recording featuring Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The case against Supreme Court attorney Prasanth Bhushan was triggered by a cyber unit discovery on November 3.
During a standard digital monitoring sweep, officers spotted a network account reposting the altered segment. The video falsely portrayed Lavrov expressing criticism toward India’s domestic affairs and crude oil purchasing decisions. Police stated that circulating such deceptive and provocative material constitutes a breach of public peace and spreads misinformation.
To address the violation, authorities filed an FIR under BNS sections 336(4), 353(1)(c), 356, and 340(2), supplemented by relevant IT Act charges. The record was maintained at the BNS Police Station’s dedicated cyber cell. The diplomatic community had already addressed the misinformation earlier. Both the Russian Embassy and India’s foreign ministry publicly confirmed the clip was entirely spurious. The MEA explicitly warned users against trusting the manipulated footage, which was later used as evidence in the ongoing legal proceedings.
