Cultural Ministry Announces Two-Year Nationwide Celebration for Shyama Prasad Mukherjee
In a statement released earlier this year, the Ministry of Culture proclaimed a two‑year, country‑wide celebration to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, a figure credited with shaping India’s political, educational and industrial landscape. The programme, running through 2025, will culminate in a high‑profile event in Kolkata where Union Home Minister Amit Shah will preside. The schedule includes a floral tribute at Mukherjee’s former home in Bhowanipur, a walk through a newly‑developed eco‑park, and the symbolic foundation‑stone ceremony for a 125‑foot tall statue. A specially curated exhibition will display rare archival material, while a musical tribute titled ‘Sur, Sanskriti aur Rashtr’ will be performed by 57 accomplished artists, directed by Padma Shri recipient Tarun Bhatta‑acharya. The ministry emphasised that the extended observance aims to preserve and promote the ideals of nationalism, public service and unity championed by Mukherjee.
