Crop Loss and House Threats Mount as Ghaghara River Bed Shifts

The Ghaghara river, known locally as the Gaghara, has entered a new phase of aggression in Barabanki’s Terai belt. After the river’s level rose in early September, a continuous cut has been observed along the banks of the Surtgaj block, swallowing fertile land and pushing towards the foundations of brick houses.

Farmers from Kedarpur estimate that several hundred bighas of standing crops have already been submerged. With the harvest not yet mature, they are forced to cut the paddy early to salvage some produce for animal feed. The loss of both crop and shelter is creating a humanitarian strain rarely seen in the region.

Monu Kumar Shukla, who lives with a family of twelve, says, “We have spent years building this house. Now we must think about saving the bricks before the river takes everything.” The local administration’s response has been limited to issuing advisory notes, leaving villagers to fend for themselves.

Experts warn that unless immediate bank‑stabilisation works are undertaken, the erosion could spread to neighboring villages, amplifying the crisis.
