CPI(M) central committee set to examine loss and organisational woes

Kerala’s CPI(M) is preparing for a pivotal central committee session after the party suffered a historic defeat in the state assembly elections, which terminated a decade of Left Democratic Front rule. The meeting, scheduled to begin on Saturday, will primarily scrutinise the factors behind the loss and outline steps for organisational revival.

A fresh dispute has emerged from Kannur, where the transfer of IAS officer Divya S. Iyer, overseeing a key infrastructure initiative, has become a flashpoint. Some party members have openly questioned the decision, viewing it as an indication of internal power struggles. Senior leaders such as E.P. Jayarajan, P.K. Smt., and K.K. Shailaja, however, have brushed aside the controversy, emphasizing that administrative transfers are normal when a new government takes charge.

Thiruvananthapuram district secretary and MLA V. Joy attempted to mitigate the narrative of discord, stating that the capital district unit remains harmonious. Yet, party insiders suggest that the sense of unease is deeper than official statements reveal.

General Secretary M.A. Baby had earlier encouraged party cadres to voice honest assessments during organisational review meetings, promising a safe platform for criticism. Those sessions have already recorded the sharpest rebuke in recent years, with several members openly critiquing former chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan and state secretary M.V. Govindan, even as the senior leadership retains its confidence in both.

The upcoming central committee dialogue will test the party’s ability to reconcile internal differences, rebuild organisational unity, and devise a credible political revival plan for Kerala.
