Court-Ordered Tear‑Down of Mosque Sparks Political Rhetoric in Uttar Pradesh

The demolition of a contested mosque in Saharanpur, carried out on September 9 after a court order, has become a flashpoint for political commentary in Uttar Pradesh. BJP leaders, including MLA Nand Kishor Gurjar, portrayed the action as a necessary step against illegal construction and warned that any attempts to provoke unrest would be met with firm resistance.

According to Gurjar, the opposition’s failure to respect judicial decisions reflects a broader distrust of democratic institutions. He asserted that the public will not forgive those who challenge legal verdicts. Minister Om Prakash Rajbhar added that the state government remains committed to upholding the rule of law, dismissing opposition remarks as “shameful politics.”

Former BJP MLA Sangeet Som raised questions about potential intimidation tactics, highlighting that the building housed a post office and leased commercial spaces on government land, and argued that such misuse must be rectified.
