Court Emphasizes Deterrence Over Punishment in NCR Rape Incidents

The Supreme Court, hearing a suo moto petition on the surge in rape cases, underscored the need for proactive deterrence rather than merely reactive punishment. Justice J B Pardiwala told Delhi Police that unless they make offenders fear retribution, future crimes will remain unchecked.

The bench noted that criminal activity spikes around major festivals, urging the police to heighten vigilance during Durga Puja, Diwali and other holidays. It also cautioned that reliance on human‑rights arguments should not impede swift action against perpetrators.

A formal affidavit describing the measures taken for women’s safety in the NCR must be filed ahead of the next court date set for 16 November.
