Court Directs Offline KYC Update After Debit Block on MP's Account

The Kolkata High Court has ordered an offline KYC update for TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee after a debit restriction was imposed on his bank account.

Bank officials had approached the bench stating that the online portal could not be used because the account was already frozen.

Justice Krishna Rao directed the bank to send an employee to the MP’s residence to collect signatures on the KYC forms, allowing the process to continue offline.

The MP was asked to provide all necessary documents, after which the court will revisit the matter of the account freeze.

Legal counsel for Banerjee noted that the existing KYC is set to expire in December and that the bank must explain why the debit block and credit‑card block were imposed initially.

The next hearing is slated for August 24, with the MP scheduled to travel abroad for eye treatment the following week.
