Cooling Failures Linked to Fatal Turbine Explosion in Ramgarh

A series of cooling malfunctions at the Hehal Power Plant are being linked to the deadly turbine explosion that occurred on August 22. Plant workers reported that the control room’s air‑conditioner had been dysfunctional for close to a month, causing ambient temperatures to climb to 60°C.

The excessive heat is believed to have caused the main electrical panel to overheat, which in turn disabled the turbine's safety circuitry. When the turbine ran at an uncontrolled speed, it detonated, killing engineers Vinod Mahato, Jageshwar Vihar, and Sanjiv Kesri.

One survivor, engineer Tarun Ravani, suffered severe injuries and was air‑lifted to a Ranchi medical facility for specialized care. Staff say that temperature data was continuously logged and sent to plant supervisors, but corrective action was never taken.

The incident underscores the critical role of climate control in high‑energy environments. Experts suggest that regular audits of cooling systems and prompt remediation of faults could prevent similar tragedies.

In the aftermath, employees have staged a silent protest, demanding that the plant’s management address safety concerns, compensate the bereaved families, and implement robust monitoring mechanisms.
