Controversy erupts over non‑veg policy at KGMU mess
A heated debate has unfolded in Lucknow after King George Medical University announced that its mess will no longer serve meat dishes. The Samajwadi Party, through its spokesperson Ashutosh Verma, condemned the move as “ill‑conceived” and harmful to the nutritional needs of the university community.
Verma explained that the hygiene concerns raised by the governor’s office should lead to better sanitation practices, not to a prohibition on non‑vegetarian food. He highlighted that the institution hosts people of all faiths, many of whom prefer meat, and that the ban could fuel discontent among students.
The party’s criticism comes alongside Verma’s remarks on unrelated issues, including the pending FIRs against officials linked to the Ram Temple trust and the need for India to play a mediating role in the renewed US‑Iran conflict.
