Constitutional Timeline Drives Scheduling of Uttar Pradesh's Third Legislative Session

Lucknow, July 21 – The third session of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly has been officially scheduled for 3 August 2026, following a cabinet resolution that aligns with Article 174 of the Indian Constitution.

The Constitution, together with the Assembly’s Rules of Procedure, restricts the interval between two legislative sessions to a maximum of six months. The second session, which began on 30 April 2026, was cut short and the houses were prorogued on 7 May 2026, creating a statutory imperative to reconvene before the end of October.

The upcoming session will address several pressing items: a supplementary budget for the financial year 2026‑27, bills intended to replace ordinances that were promulgated during the inter‑session period, and other necessary legislative work.

Finance and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Khanna briefed the press that the supplementary grants will be tabled for discussion, while replacement bills will be introduced to provide legislative backing to earlier executive actions.

The Assembly’s procedural rules stipulate that members must be notified of the session date at least seven days prior. The cabinet has confirmed that this timeline will be respected, ensuring that legislators are fully prepared for the August sitting.
