Congress Leader Warns Election Integrity Threatened by Mass Voter List Cuts

Congress parliamentarian Varsha Gaitonde took to the podium on September 4 to caution that the alleged removal of nearly two crore voter entries could jeopardize the credibility of India’s electoral system. She highlighted that the same roll‑cleaning exercise, if true, would cast doubt on the legitimacy of previous state assembly and municipal corporation elections, which were conducted under the same voter database.

Gaitonde urged the Election Commission to uphold its constitutional mandate of conducting free, fair, and transparent elections, and to protect every eligible citizen’s right to vote. She demanded an immediate, detailed briefing on the criteria used to delete such a large number of names, and called for a judicial review if necessary.

The Congress leader also referenced concerns raised by Shiv Sena and NCP members about selective deletion, suggesting that the process could be aimed at specific communities or political opponents. She warned that any manipulation of the voter list would erode public confidence and undermine the democratic fabric of the nation.

In closing, Gaitonde appealed for an independent audit of the SIR process, insisting that the Election Commission must act swiftly to restore faith in the electoral roll and ensure that no political party exploits administrative tools for partisan advantage.
