Congress Fails to Win Any MLC Seat in 28-Seat Four-State Polls
The Congress party has failed to secure a single seat in the Legislative Council elections held across four key states, leaving it facing fresh questions about its electoral performance. The results were announced for 28 seats in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar and Karnataka.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reacted to the outcome with a pointed remark on X. He said the elections were held through ballot papers across these four large states and asked people to guess how many seats the Congress had won. His comment directly responds to the opposition's repeated calls for ballot-paper voting and its objections to EVMs.
The Congress has not won any seat in three of the four states. In Maharashtra, the party has been wiped out. The contest there between the ruling Mahayuti alliance and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi was tight, but the Congress's standing was visibly weak.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi also commented on the results, stating that the party had not won any of the 28 Legislative Council seats it contested. He argued that the Congress often claims vote theft and questions democratic institutions, but blames the system when results are unfavourable.
He further said that even in elections conducted through ballot papers, the party could not win and suffered a humiliating defeat. Joshi claimed that these outcomes had cast doubt on the credibility of the party's allegations.
The Legislative Council polls were held for 28 graduate and teacher constituencies. In Uttar Pradesh, 11 seats went to the polls, including five graduate and six teacher constituencies. Bihar recorded voting for eight seats, with four graduate and four teacher constituencies. Maharashtra held elections for five seats, comprising three graduate and two teacher constituencies. Karnataka proved the most damaging for the Congress, as it lost all four seats there.
