Congress accused of politicising 131st constitutional amendment, BJP reacts
Senior Congress figure P. Chidambaram alleged that the BJP was preparing to re‑introduce the 131st Constitutional Amendment Bill in the monsoon session, claiming it would ostensibly increase women’s reservation but actually facilitate delimitation and constituency re‑mapping. The BJP, through Pratul Shahdev, dismissed these allegations as baseless.
Shahdev pointed out that the Union government has not announced any such move and that the Opposition’s narrative was designed to create confusion. He emphasized that the DMK, a former ally of Congress, has chosen to sit independently in Parliament, reflecting a shift in the political equation. Shahdev called for an objective evaluation of the amendment’s merits rather than partisan speculation.
