Community Participation Strengthened Through Unified Governance Structure in Assam Schools
Aimed at reinforcing community involvement in school administration, the new Assam education notification introduces a unified governance structure that replaces fragmented committees with a single School Management Committee in every school. By bringing together parents, teachers, local officials, subject specialists, alumni, and representatives of marginalized groups, the SMC is designed to be a robust platform for inclusive decision‑making.
The department highlighted that this approach will empower local stakeholders to take part in setting priorities, overseeing implementation, and evaluating outcomes. The SMCs will act as the chief conduit for decentralized governance, aligning local practices with the national objectives set out in the National Education Policy 2020 and the Samagra Shiksha 2.0 initiative.
Officials expect that the inclusive composition of the committees, coupled with clear role definitions, will enhance transparency, accountability, and overall quality of education across Assam’s schools.
