Combined Anti‑Terror Operations Tested in Thailand’s Surathani Camp

New Delhi, August 25 – The ‘Maitri‑15’ Indo‑Thai bilateral exercise, conducted at Thailand’s Surathani‑based Vishvabadi camp, shifted focus toward realistic anti‑terror operations. Over a two‑week period, 85 Indian soldiers and an equal number of Thai troops rehearsed coordinated actions ranging from vehicle checkpoint inspections to cordon‑and‑search missions inside simulated terrorist compounds.

The drill incorporated close‑combat drills, where Indian forces demonstrated their Army Martial Arts Routine (AMAR) while Thai personnel showcased Muay Thai techniques. Both sides exchanged tactical knowledge on rapid decision‑making in semi‑urban counter‑insurgency settings.

A major segment centered on the detection and neutralisation of improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Participants practiced threat identification, risk assessment and the execution of safe disposal procedures, ensuring readiness for real‑world explosive hazards.

The Indian contingent featured Gurkha riflemen, whereas the Thai side fielded the 3rd Battalion of the 25th Infantry Brigade. The primary aim of Maitri‑15 is to sharpen company‑level anti‑terror capabilities, foster interoperability and strengthen mutual trust between the two armies.
