Fuel price inflation has pushed Delhi-NCR’s transport workers to the brink, prompting the Chalaak Shakti Union to declare a three-day strike from 21 to 23 May. The union points out that the fare rate set nearly a decade and a half ago has never been updated despite multiple court orders and departmental assurances. Vice-president Anuj Rathore explained that a proposal to raise tariffs to between Rs 20 and Rs 25 per kilometre now sits with the Lieutenant Governor, yet no notification has been issued. Drivers say the gap between income and expenditure has widened dramatically, leaving many unable to meet daily household expenses. The planned protest will keep auto-rickshaws, taxis, and ride-hailing vehicles off Delhi’s streets unless the government initiates meaningful dialogue. Union leaders have warned against internal divisions and asked all members to participate fully. They added that any credible offer from the transport department could lead to a reconsideration of further agitation.
