CJP Calls for Transparency After Supreme Court Interim Order on Protest FIRs
New Delhi, July 28 – Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) spokesperson Saurav Das used his X account to voice apprehension about the Supreme Court's provisional directive on several public‑interest litigations linked to recent peaceful protests.
The court's fourth clause specifically authorises the central and state governments to continue with the FIRs that were lodged during the demonstrations, a step that Das says clashes with the assurances previously extended to youth participants. Those assurances had pledged that FIRs would be withdrawn and no punitive steps would be taken against those exercising their right to peaceful assembly.
Das warned that the interim order could become a tool for the Union government and BJP‑run state administrations to sustain legal pressures on protesters, turning political dissent into a prosecutable matter. He questioned the absence of any objection from the government's counsel, especially after a series of dialogues that culminated in a consensus to end the protests.
The CJP emphasized that the confidence placed by thousands of students and young activists in democratic institutions must not be compromised by subsequent legal actions. While the order does not explicitly block the withdrawal of FIRs, the party urged the centre and the concerned state governments to keep a written record of the promises made during the negotiations and to act in line with them throughout the judicial process.
Concluding his statement, Das cautioned that if the government fails to honour its commitments, CJP may have little choice but to mobilise a renewed, nation‑wide movement with the backing of students and youth, asserting that respect for promises is essential for the health of the democratic system.
