CJP Activist Sends Multiple Emails to Secure Rally Permit, Police Launch Probe

Dedipyo Gangopadhyay, a self‑declared active member of the Cochinchina Janata Party (CJP), sent two separate email requests to the Kolkata Police seeking authorization for a rally supporting Sonam Wangchuk's hunger strike. The first email, dated July 19, asked for a permit to hold the march on July 22, beginning at College Street and ending at Rani Rashmoni Road. After the police refused the request, a second email was dispatched the same day, asking for a similar clearance for July 24 on the identical route. The repeated appeals triggered a police investigation into Gangopadhyay’s political affiliations and the legitimacy of the rally’s objectives. In a media briefing, the activist confirmed that he had authored both emails and stated that no official approval had been received yet. He urged students, youth, and civil society members to join the rally while advising those implicated in alleged cash‑for‑admission scandals in school recruitment to stay away. The police warned that any unauthorized demonstration would be dealt with using necessary precautionary steps.
