Women Prisoners Becoming Self-Reliant Through the Nischay Program

In Raipur, on 17 July 2026, a unique initiative was launched at Central Jail Raipur for the comprehensive rehabilitation and dignified reintegration of female prisoners into mainstream society. Under the Nischay program run by the jail administration, vocational training is being provided to make women inmates self-reliant, creating employment opportunities within the jail itself. Sixty female prisoners received training in pickling and spice production. The Central Jail provided specialized training in basic pickles and spice manufacturing to 60 women convicted under various offences, aiming to enable them to set up their own commercial units. During the training, the inmates were taught practical knowledge on food product preparation, quality control, hygiene, packaging, and safe storage. After completing the program, the women began regular pickle production inside the women's wing of the jail. Through the Aastha Griha Industry, the inmates are now producing a variety of hygienic pickles—such as mango, lemon, carrot and garlic—under full sanitation. Arrangements have been made for selling these quality products. The finished items are made available to the public via the Aastha Mungodi Center (Aastha Griha Industry stall) within the jail complex and the jail canteen. A portion of the revenue is directly deposited into the prisoners’ accounts, empowering them financially and making them self‑sufficient. Jail Superintendent’s Comment Jail Superintendent Mr. Yogesh Singh Kshatri, commenting on this commendable initiative, said that a jail is not only a place of punishment but also a centre for positive transformation in life. Under the guidance of Jail Director Mr. Himanshu Gupta, the Nischay program across prisons is providing employable skills to female inmates. These skills will help them become self‑reliant and, after release, live with dignity in society and earn a livelihood. The jail administration also clarified that such vocational training programs will continue to be conducted regularly for the bright future of the inmates.
