Women Commando Teams Drive Full Helmet Adoption in Rural India

Empowering women on the front lines, a squad of 73 female commandos spearheaded a helmet‑wearing revolution in Balod district. Their strategy combined personal outreach, on‑spot demonstrations, and financial encouragement for helmet purchases.

The commandos traveled from house to house across seven villages, explaining how helmets can prevent fatal injuries. Their persistent engagement convinced every rider—totaling 1,103—to wear a helmet every time they mounted a bike.

Key villages included Jewartala and Siddhi in the Gundardehi block, Bori and Khairwahi in Balod block, and Annutola, Kasahi Bori, and Jamulwahi in Daudilohara block. The result: a village‑wide helmet compliance rate of 100%.

The success was overseen by Padma Shri Shamshad Begum, president of the Women Commando Assistance Welfare Committee, whose coordination ensured that the volunteers remained focused and motivated.

During a recent inspection, IG Shandilya honored the commandos with traditional shawls and flashlights, urging them to replicate the initiative in other parts of the district and beyond.
