Water Conservation Transforms Farmers' Lives, Rajpur's Community Check Dam Becomes a Model for Rural Prosperity
The check dam built under the Developed India Guarantee for Employment and Livelihood Mission (Rural) has proven to be a boon for farmers.
Groundwater level increased, 10 hectares of land received irrigation, and 1671 man-days of employment were generated.
Raipur, Efforts by the state government under the leadership of Chief Minister Mr. Vishnu Deo Sai, connecting water conservation with public participation, are bringing about positive changes in rural areas. The community check dam constructed in Gram Panchayat Rajpur of Dhamdha development block in Durg district under the Developed India Guarantee for Employment and Livelihood Mission (Rural) has become an excellent example of water conservation, employment generation, and agricultural prosperity today. This project has not only conserved rainwater but has also paved the way for increasing farmers' income by providing them with year-round irrigation facilities.
Administrative approval for the construction of this community check dam, built near Bhagwat's field in Gram Panchayat Rajpur, was provided for an amount of Rs 16.02 lakh. By the completion of the project, a total of Rs 15.69 lakh was spent, of which Rs 2.79 lakh was spent on labor and Rs 12.55 lakh on materials. This work generated a total of 1671 man-days of employment, providing local laborers with employment in the village itself, reducing migration, and strengthening the financial condition of many families.
More than 10 thousand cubic meters of water conservation capacity The 12-meter span check dam with a water conservation capacity of 10,080 cubic meters is providing new strength to the water system of the entire region. While earlier most of the rainwater used to flow into drains, now the same water is being conserved and is gradually enriching the groundwater reserves. As a result, the water level in nearby wells, handpumps, and borewells has increased significantly, and water availability remains better even in summers compared to the past.
Farming became self-reliant, farmers' income increased Many farmers, including Mr. Bhagvata Sukram, Mr. Busahu Ram Singh, Mrs. Chitrekha Punit, Mr. Ishwari Madhur Singh, and Mr. Kewal Pachru, are benefiting from this project. Earlier, farming was completely dependent on rain, but now farmers are successfully cultivating Kharif as well as Rabi and vegetable crops. With adequate irrigation facilities, production has increased, farming costs have decreased, and farmers' incomes are continuously rising.
According to Technical Assistant Ms. Pooja Patel, the check dam has been constructed in accordance with all technical standards and can provide irrigation facilities to approximately 10 hectares of agricultural land. This structure is playing an important role in water conservation, as well as in mitigating the effects of climate change, providing relief to farmers during drought, and promoting a sustainable agricultural system.
Water conservation provided a permanent solution to the village According to the Gram Panchayat's Employment Assistant, after the construction of the check dam, rainwater is being conserved within the village, which keeps the fields moist for a long time and provides timely irrigation to the farmers. Farmers say that the worry of crop failure has significantly reduced, and farming has become more profitable. Today, this community check dam in Rajpur is not just a construction work but has emerged as a successful and inspiring model of water conservation, groundwater augmentation, rural employment, and agricultural prosperity. This project is a strong proof that if every drop of rainwater is conserved scientifically, a permanent solution to the water crisis is possible, and the rural economy can be infused with new energy and a new direction.
