Despite strict laws against the practice, instances of triple talaq continue to surface. A recent case in the Tarbahar police station area of Bilaspur involves a woman who was subjected to dowry demands and harassment by her husband, culminating in him uttering ‘talaq’ three times and evicting her from their home. The victim had married Nasir Ali of Supela, Bhilai, in December 2022. Her family had fulfilled all the dowry demands at the time of the wedding. However, shortly after the marriage, she faced physical and mental abuse due to demands for a motorcycle and other accusations. Despite interventions by family and community members, the harassment persisted. Finally, the husband, Nasir, pronounced ‘talaq’ three times, expelling his wife. The woman, along with her family, filed a complaint at the Mahila Thana. Based on the victim’s statement, the police have registered a case against the husband, Nasir, his mother-in-law, and others under the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, along with charges of dowry harassment and other relevant sections. The police investigation is ongoing.
