The Fate of Bastar Farmer Sonadhar Changed by Dabbri Construction

Raipur, Chhattisgarh's ambitious scheme "Developed India - Guarantee for Employment and Livelihood Mission (Rural)" is emerging as a major tool for water conservation and livelihood enhancement in rural areas. Under this scheme, the construction of a dabbri (small pond) in the village panchayat Khotlapal of Bakhawand development block in Bastar district not only resolved water scarcity but also brought new prosperity to local farmer Sonadhar. The dabbri built on Sonadhar's land has become an exemplary model of better natural resource management and rural development in the region. Previously, most rainwater used to flow away, causing severe irrigation crises during summer. After the dabbri was built, rainwater is effectively harvested, providing timely irrigation and allowing Sonadhar to grow extra crops annually. Abundant water has also revived livestock rearing and vegetable garden activities. The dabbri now serves not only for irrigation but also as a strong supplemental livelihood source; Sonadhar reports successful fish farming in the pond generating additional annual income, and plans to start duck farming. The project has improved groundwater levels, increasing water availability in nearby wells and handpumps, benefiting surrounding crops. During construction, job-card holders from the village received local employment, creating jobs and reducing migration. This successful experiment in Khotlapal demonstrates that with community participation and coordinated government schemes, agriculture, environment, and rural livelihoods can be simultaneously strengthened and made self-reliant.
