Amit Pandey, Khairagarh. Climate change in Chhattisgarh is having a serious impact on biodiversity. Due to this, birds have reached the verge of extinction, which is a matter of concern. In many areas of the state, cranes birds were generally seen, but now only one couple of it has remained. Research was also done about this, in which many shocking facts about the cranes have come out.
In the whole of Chhattisgarh, only one couple of cranes crane remained, which lives in Lakhanpur block of Surguja district. The stork birds in the state have come to the verge of extinction, which raises questions about the awareness and responsibilities of our nature.
As such, more than 255 bird species are found in Surguja. But these have special significance of cranes cranes, and that is because it is an indicator of the health of wetlands (ponds and water bodies). 20 years ago, the number of stork birds in the state was 8 to 10 pairs i.e. about 20 birds. At the same time, in the year 2015, this number has come down to 4 pairs i.e. 8 and today only 1 couple is left. Their decreasing number shows that there is a disturbance in the surrounding environment.

Which means that O hunter, you should not get the reputation for eternity, because you have killed one of the pairs of the working stork bird. It is said that Maharishi Valmiki composed the epic Ramayana, inspired by this verse. Therefore, the importance of the stork bird is from time immemorial.
Research on stork bird
In Chhattisgarh, Prateek Thakur, AM Bharos, Dr. Himanshu Gupta and Ravi Naidu did research in Chhattisgarh, in which many shocking facts have come out. When researched, it was found that this pair of stork has been seen around the Jamgala and scales water tank of Lakhanpur for the past several years. In the year 2022, he had two chicks, which raised hopes that their number would start increasing again. But in December 2023, a chick was killed by a wild animal.
According to research, cranes produce only two children at a time, one of which dies before it is an adult and the other is only an adult. He learns the essential skills of life from his parents with the art of flying. However, recently he is also missing and possibly looking for his spouse. The main residence of the couple is Lakhanpur, but in search of food it goes to the surrounding fields, small ponds and the banks of the Rehhand River.
Problem for stork birds
There are many problems in front of the last couple of the stork. For example, increasing fishing activities in the ponds, their nests are threatened by nets. Use of toxic chemicals in the fields, can add poison to their food. The attack of stray dogs is the biggest threat to chicks. Apart from this, their natural habitats are also ending with illegal sand mining. However, the administration and environmental protector are making people aware by putting up posters to save the stork.
First seen hunter bird
For the first time in Bilaspur’s Sipat Dame and Surguja’s Taraju village, a hunter bird named East Marsh Harrier was seen for the first time. Mainly this bird is found in some parts of Asia, it was never seen before in Chhattisgarh. It is an indication that if the water bodies are better then other rare species can also return to the state.
