Local Residents Appeal to Collector on Encroached Cemetery in Dhamtari
Boderapuri village in Dhamtari district faces a grave problem as a historic six‑acre cemetery has been seized by local strongmen. Over the past three to four years, the plot, once reserved for funeral rites, has been cleared and planted with agricultural crops.
The illegal conversion deprives families of any space to conduct traditional cremations, forcing them to travel long distances for last rites. Residents say the situation has caused repeated distress and social tension.
On Tuesday, a sizable assembly of villagers marched to the collector’s office, demanding that the government demarcate the burial ground and restore it to its intended purpose. They warned that a hunger strike and sit‑in would follow if redress is delayed.
District Collector Avinash Mishra responded by mandating a swift probe. He instructed senior officials to file a comprehensive report within a fixed period and assured that anyone found responsible will face stringent legal action.
