Police probe jewellery design scam that cost Bilaspur woman ₹31,000

Bilaspur – On September 12, a senior resident of Imli Bhatta, Bhandwapara, was lured by a stranger promising to send her jewellery designs abroad for a payment. The 60‑year‑old housewife, Sarvaswati Shrivast, agreed and displayed her valuable gold and silver pieces, which included a mangalsutra, a locket‑styled necklace, earrings and a paila anklet.

The alleged dealer, posing as a design facilitator, seized the items worth an estimated ₹31,000 and vanished. Despite the victim’s efforts to locate the woman, no leads were found in the surrounding neighbourhood.

Sarvaswati filed a complaint at the Sarkanda police station on September 19. The police have recorded a theft case and are now pursuing investigative steps to determine the suspect’s identity, trace her movements, and collect forensic evidence. The case highlights growing concerns over fraud schemes that manipulate cultural jewellery customs, especially targeting individuals living alone.
