Police Commissioner Visits Hospital After Riot Claims 16 Injuries in Raipur

A riot that erupted during a BJP‑organized rally near the Congress building in Raipur on July 22 resulted in sixteen police officers being injured. The clash began when a contingent of Congress supporters breached a police‑set barricade and started hurling stones and bottles at the on‑duty personnel.

In an effort to restore order, officers employed water cannons and tear‑gas cartridges, eventually managing to disperse the aggressive crowd. The escalation left sixteen members of the police force wounded, including a female constable and two officers with serious injuries.

Within minutes of the emergency call, Police Commissioner Sanjeev Shukla proceeded to Ramkrishna Care Hospital. He met the patients, evaluated their health status, and obtained a comprehensive report from the treating doctors. The commissioner emphasized the need for prompt and adequate medical care and motivated the injured to focus on recovery.

Constable Kaleshwar Verma explained that he was caught in the barricade when the crowd surged, causing severe respiratory distress that required immediate medical attention. Trainee Sub‑Inspector Devraj Singh sustained a serious head wound after a bottle struck him, and doctors continue to monitor his condition closely.

Other constables received basic first‑aid at the scene and were discharged after being stabilised. Senior police officials, including Deputy Commissioner Tarakesh Patel, ACP Nilesh Dwivedi, and TI Rajesh Marri, were present at the hospital. An inquiry is in progress to identify the individuals responsible for the unrest.
