New Direction for Water Conservation and Groundwater Augmentation in Dhamtari District

Connecting water conservation and groundwater augmentation with public participation, the Dhamtari district administration has taken a significant initiative towards the conservation of community water sources in rural areas. Under the guidance of the Collector, administrative approval has been granted for the construction of sand filters on 357 water sources in the district at a cost of 185.64 lakh rupees. This step is considered highly effective in scientifically managing rainwater, maintaining the quality of water sources, and strengthening groundwater recharge. According to the information received, out of the approved 357 sand filters, 124 will be constructed in Kurud development block, 107 in Nagari, 78 in Dhamtari, and 48 in Magarlod development block. All these works will be implemented by the respective gram panchayats within the stipulated time frame, ensuring that rural areas benefit from them quickly. Scientific Technology to Improve Water Quality and Groundwater Level The Chief Executive Officer of the Zila Panchayat stated that sand filters are a very effective and scientific technique for the conservation of water sources. Their construction near ponds, wells, and reservoirs will naturally filter out soil, silt, plastic, and waste carried by rainwater. This will prevent siltation in water sources, maintain water purity, and strengthen the groundwater recharge process. In the current scenario of falling groundwater levels due to climate change, erratic rainfall, and excessive water extraction, this system will help in naturally absorbing rainwater into the ground. This will provide significant relief in averting a potential drinking water crisis in the future. Promoting Environmental Balance and Rural Livelihoods This initiative will prove highly beneficial for both the environment and the local economy. While clean water sources will be useful for birds and animals, improved water availability and quality will indirectly strengthen agriculture, fisheries, and other livelihood-based activities. The district administration has urged gram panchayats, local representatives, and water and sanitation committees to actively participate in the regular maintenance and cleanliness of these structures. This initiative aligns with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal (SDG-6: Clean Water and Sanitation). Water conservation is being given the form of a public movement, not just a construction activity, thereby emerging Dhamtari district as an exemplary model in the field of water management.
