Investigation Ordered After SI Lets Three Accused Walk Free

Following a high‑profile diesel theft bust in Bilaspur, Sub‑Inspector Umesh Upadhyay of Koni police station was suspended for allegedly permitting three of the five detained suspects to exit the police station without senior clearance.

The operation seized two scorpia‑type trucks, a cache of 200 litres of stolen diesel, a pipe and iron rods. While two offenders remain in custody, the other three are still at large, prompting doubts about procedural integrity.

Social media circulated footage of the raid, showing police escorting detained individuals from the Bhadouriakhara hamlet of Samertal. The visual evidence displayed handcuffs on several suspects.

Rumors surfaced that Baisakh Lonia, Rajesh Lonia, Raju Lonia and a woman were later released, leading to speculation about undisclosed negotiations. Official sources have yet to confirm any such dealings.

The Bilaspur SSP has mandated a preliminary probe, insisting on a full report within seven days. Subsequent actions will be based on the inquiry’s conclusions.
