Raipur, June 03, 2026/ Governor Shri Raman Deyka has emphasized the need to conduct sand mining activities in the rivers and major streams of Chhattisgarh in a scientific, balanced, and systematic manner. He said that sand is an important resource for the state's development and infrastructure construction, therefore it is essential to maintain a balance between its use and conservation, as uncontrolled exploitation can lead to serious adverse effects on the environment and water resources. At Lok Bhawan today, the Governor discussed this issue with the Secretary of the Mineral Department, P. Dayanand, and directed that necessary steps be taken. He said that sand mining should be carried out in accordance with prescribed rules and scientific standards, so that both the objectives of environmental protection and development can be equally achieved. The Governor appreciated the information about the ongoing drone-based surveillance and monitoring through the Mineral 2.0 portal in the state. The Governor said that it is extremely important to protect the natural structure and water-holding capacity of rivers and major streams. He said that unplanned mining activities can impact riverbanks, groundwater levels, and local ecology. Therefore, regular monitoring of mining operations and effective control over illegal mining should be ensured. He said that long-term and coordinated efforts are needed to enhance the capacity of rivers and water sources and for groundwater conservation. The Governor directed that a scientific study of areas related to sand mining be conducted. He said that if necessary, surveys and technical studies can be conducted by expert institutions like the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), so that steps can be taken towards better management by assessing the impacts of mining activities. Governor Deyka said that the use of mineral resources like sand is essential for the development of the state, but alongside this, the conservation of natural resources should also be prioritized.
