Four‑Hour Standoff with a Bear After It Killed a Brother‑Sister Duo

A deadly encounter with a female bear has left a Kanker village reeling. The animal first struck brother Halal Khur Juri while he was seated near his field, inflicting fatal wounds. His sister, Chamaron Bai, arrived moments later after hearing his screams and attempted a rescue, only to be gored herself.

A third sibling, Khoreenbai, who was working nearby, heard the distress calls and rushed to the site. She too was attacked and suffered severe injuries, later being air‑lifted to Kanker Medical College for emergency treatment.

The bear, which had recently killed its own cub, lingered over the bodies for roughly four hours, repelling every effort by villagers and forest officials to retrieve the corpses. Eventually, a specialist team equipped with a tranquilizer gun from Raipur managed to sedate the animal, allowing authorities to capture it safely.

The prolonged presence of the bear caused panic among the locals, leading some to confront the animal with sticks before police intervened. The tragedy has cast a pall of sorrow over the community, with the surviving sister fighting for her life in the hospital.
