Fake snakebite deaths claim Rs 17.24 crore, probe expands

Data released by the police show a striking mismatch between reported snake‑bite fatalities and the compensation demanded. In the last three years, Jashpur district recorded only 96 deaths, while Bilaspur claimed 431 fatalities, justifying a payout of 17.24 crore rupees. The disparity raised serious doubts about the authenticity of the claims. Investigators are now scrutinising the paperwork, bank statements and the role of senior officers in approving the payouts. The revenue minister, Tankarama Verma, assured the legislature that any further involvement will be met with strict legal action.
