The greed of the sand mafia in Chhattisgarh reached a new low when illegal mining activities led to the desecration of a traditional cremation ground in Dhamtari. Late Wednesday night, operators at the Kharenga sand mine along the Mahanadi River excavated an area used by villagers for decades to bury their dead. The relentless digging resulted in the unearthing of ten human skeletons, which were left discarded on the riverbank after the miners secured their haul of sand. Villagers who visited the riverbank on Thursday morning were horrified to see the remains of their ancestors and recently deceased relatives exposed. Following the discovery, teams from the Revenue and Mining departments conducted a raid on the site. Although they were able to impound five tractors used for transporting illegal sand, the perpetrators remain at large.
