December Becomes Sole Month for Extra Load Charges in Chhattisgarh

Effective from the upcoming billing cycle, the Chhattisgarh power board will apply the extra load surcharge only in the December statement, regardless of when the overload occurs during the year. The policy defines an overload as three consecutive months of consumption exceeding the approved capacity.

For each kilowatt of excess load, customers will be billed ₹800 as the base fee and an additional ₹144 as GST, totaling ₹944. Previously, this amount was added every three months, inflating the bill suddenly and often catching consumers off guard.

By consolidating the charge into the December bill – which is usually issued in early January – the utility expects the financial impact to be less severe, given the lower demand for electricity in the cooler months.
