Chhattisgarh Farmers Host Amphibian Wedding to Invite Monsoon

In an effort to end a dry spell, farmers of Khunsi village in Surajpur district organized a full‑fledged wedding for a frog and a toad. The event featured printed cards, a brass band, a traditional baraat, and seven sacred rounds performed according to Hindu customs. Organisers assert that the ritual, rooted in local folklore, is intended to appease Indra, the god of rain, and bring the much‑needed monsoon.

The Indian Meteorological Department reported that after three days of limited activity, the monsoon has become fully operational again, with forecasts indicating moderate to heavy rainfall over the next four days across the state. Seasonal data shows that Chhattisgarh has recorded 239.2 mm of rain between June 1 and July 8, roughly 17% lower than the normal 286.7 mm.

District‑wise figures reveal that while Sarangarh‑Bilaspur enjoyed a surplus of rain, districts such as Sarga witnessed a 53% deficit. Meteorologists warn of occasional lightning and thunderstorms, especially in northern territories. Recent intense downpours have caused flooding in several urban pockets, prompting officials to caution residents about potential water‑logging in low‑lying neighborhoods.
