CG Education Dept Issues Age‑Based Admission Guidelines for Nursery to Class 1

In a move to strengthen foundational learning, Chhattisgarh’s School Education Department released detailed age‑based admission norms for the early years of schooling. The guidelines, effective from 1 April 2024, require children to meet specific age criteria at the start of the academic session.

The prescribed age brackets are: Nursery – more than three years but less than four; KG‑1 – more than four but less than five; KG‑2 – more than five but less than six; Class 1 – more than six but less than seven. These thresholds reflect the recommendations of the National Education Policy‑2020 and aim to ensure children are developmentally ready for each stage.

A three‑month relaxation clause allows a child who has not yet reached the required age on 1 April but does so by 1 July to be admitted, offering flexibility for parents. The policy also clarifies that pupils transitioning directly from a recognised pre‑primary class to Class 1 are exempt from the age test, provided they submit proper documentation.

All schools—government, private and those receiving aid—must enforce the new standards, and the rule extends to the 25 % RTE reserved seats in private schools. District education officers, block education officers and principals have been instructed to disseminate the information widely among parents.
