Bilaspur On Alert as Strong Winds Loom; Preparations Intensify
Preparations have intensified in Bilaspur as the district braces for strong winds expected over October 28 and 29. The Meteorological Department has indicated that gusts of 70 to 80 kilometres per hour could sweep the region. Collector Sanjay Agrawal has taken charge of relief and rescue arrangements and has asked all departments to be prepared for any eventuality.
The administration's main goals are to limit possible damage, move people in danger to safe locations and provide quick help in emergencies. As part of these steps, the employment fair has been postponed, and entry into reservoirs and picnic spots has been prohibited.
Speed in response
At a time-bound review meeting, the Collector stressed that relief must not be delayed in any emergency. Officials must map likely affected areas, keep shelters ready and run control rooms round the clock from district to tehsil level.
The Collector also directed that each piece of information reaching the control room be logged and passed to senior officers at once. Urban bodies, including the municipal corporation, have been told to keep JCBs and essential resources ready. Watch will be kept on low-lying areas prone to waterlogging, and safe shelters will be prepared with cleanliness and basic facilities.
Safeguarding trees, hoardings and electricity
Strong winds may break tree branches, bring down hoardings and disturb power supply. To prevent this, risky trees and bent branches are to be pruned and hoardings with weak support are to be removed.
The electricity department will check weak poles and sensitive lines. Power supply to hospitals and drinking water services will receive special attention so that vital services keep running during harsh weather.
Hospitals to remain staffed
The health department has been instructed to keep doctors and health workers available during emergencies so that no patient has to search for treatment. Women whose expected delivery date is October 28 or 29 will be admitted to hospital one day earlier, to avoid travel trouble in bad weather and to guarantee timely medical care.
Rescue units and police on standby
Home Guards and the Disaster Response Team have been asked to stay ready for relief and rescue work. Rope teams, boats, emergency lights and other equipment will be inspected and kept in working order, and skilled local swimmers will be identified if required. All police stations have been alerted, and the SDM will hold block-level meetings to fix responsibilities and improve coordination among departments.
Public awareness drive
Public announcements and loudspeakers will be used in villages and cities to warn residents. Attending the meeting were Municipal Corporation Commissioner Prakash Sarve, District Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Sandeep Agrawal, Additional Collector Virendra Bahadur Panchbhai and officials from various departments.
