State’s Cheetah Reintroduction Reaches 60 Animals Under Robust Management

Madhya Pradesh’s ambitious cheetah restoration programme has crossed the 60‑animal threshold, according to figures released by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on October 7. The state began the effort in 2022 by importing eight cheetahs from abroad and has since expanded the herd through careful breeding and relocation.

The latest release of two cheetahs – Vyom and Neera – into the Rani Durgavati Tiger Reserve marks the third dedicated habitat for the big cat within the state. Unlike earlier sites, this reserve already houses a thriving tiger community, offering a unique opportunity to study inter‑species dynamics.

Yadav stressed that the increase in cheetah numbers signals improved wildlife governance, better protection against poaching, and a healthier ecosystem overall. He also reiterated the plan to introduce two more cheetahs to the Sagar reserve in the next month, further strengthening the breeding population.

The program is positioned as a flagship model for wildlife restoration across the Indian subcontinent, showcasing how coordinated state action can bring back a species that disappeared from Asia more than a century ago.
