Chavan Links Women Reservation Bills to Government’s Quest for Supermajority

Prithviraj Chavan raised serious concerns about the government’s push for new women’s reservation and delimitation bills, alleging a hidden agenda to secure a two‑thirds majority in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. He explained that attaining such a supermajority would enable the ruling party to amend the constitution and alter several entrenched provisions.

Chavan reminded that the concept of a 33 percent reservation for women was originally introduced by the Congress, and when he served as Maharashtra chief minister, the state increased the quota to 50 percent. He warned that the current linkage of the reservation bill with delimitation is a strategic move to win electoral advantage, not a genuine policy decision.

According to Chavan, the BJP is aware that it may not win the 2029 general election and is therefore accelerating constitutional reforms to shape the political landscape in its favor.
