Centre and Delhi Administration Accused of Failing Clean Air Promise

Delhi’s air quality has reached alarming levels this Diwali, with the Air Quality Index recorded between 500 and 600, a figure that surpasses the threshold for hazardous conditions. Aam Aadmi Party’s Haryana in‑charge Sushil Gupta has publicly reprimanded both the central government and the Delhi administration for falling short of their pledged clean‑air initiatives.

Gupta explained that the current AQI makes ordinary activities like walking or opening windows hazardous, especially for those with asthma, COPD, or other respiratory problems. He noted that hospitals are overwhelmed and that many sufferers are left without adequate care at home.

The leader reminded listeners that Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had, prior to the elections, sworn to deliver a "clean Diwali," to restore the Yamuna’s clarity, and to ensure pollution‑free air. According to Gupta, these statements have not been honoured, with the pollution levels continuing to rise despite the promises.

Calling for a joint strategy, the AAP representative urged the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change and the Delhi government to devise a robust emergency response, including stricter vehicular emission controls, temporary bans on firecrackers, and rapid deployment of medical aid.

While delivering his criticism, Gupta extended Diwali wishes, hoping for health and prosperity for all citizens. He also referenced the centenary of senior political figure Lal Krishna Advani, wishing him a long and healthy life, while noting that his former prominence has markedly declined.
