Despite regional reports of scarcity, the Union government has clarified that petrol and diesel availability remains robust nationwide. The apparent shortages are attributed to misdirected purchases and stock accumulation by certain industrial consumers. India ranks as the fourth-largest refining nation globally, supported by 22 active refineries producing 258.1 million tonnes annually. During 2025-26, the country consumed 243.2 million tonnes domestically and exported 61.5 million tonnes, underscoring its strong supply position. Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has been in continuous dialogue with oil marketing companies and industry bodies to ensure uninterrupted delivery. Public sector oil firms are currently bearing losses of around 550 crore rupees every day by not fully passing on international price increases to retail buyers. The government has directed states to crack down on hoarding and unauthorized fuel diversion that is distorting retail supply. Officials have also asked industry associations to educate members about regulatory compliance. Citizens are requested to disregard unverified claims and follow official communications only.
