CBI’s Latest Arrest Adds to List of Accused in Abhijit Sarkar Killing

Kolkata – The Central Bureau of Investigation reported on Tuesday that it has taken into custody another alleged conspirator in the murder of BJP activist Abhijit Sarkar. The newcomer, identified as Vishal Pal, also known as Gopal Das, was apprehended in the Madhyamgram locality of North 24‑Parganas.

Authorities say Pal had been evading capture for an extended period. His arrest follows the recent seizure of Arup Das, a fellow fugitive, who was taken into custody in Assam.

The case originates from the violent clashes that ensued after the 2021 West Bengal assembly elections. Sarkar, a party worker from Kankurgachi in North Kolkata, was reportedly killed by members of the ruling Trinamool Congress. His family alleges that he was subjected to harassment before being murdered.

On 1 July, a special CBI court in Kolkata framed charges against 19 individuals, including former TMC MLA Parash Pal and ex‑KMC councilor Swapna Samaddar, both of whom have been interrogated multiple times.

Initially, the Narikeldanga police lodged charges against 15 suspects. After a directive from the Calcutta High Court, the CBI assumed investigative control, later filing additional charges that raised the total number of accused to 20. The expanded charge sheet also names a former female sub‑inspector and a police station in‑charge, both of whom have been arrested.

During a bail hearing, the court warned that when protectors become predators, society suffers. The victim’s relatives have criticised the perceived slow pace of the CBI investigation.

Since the new state government took office, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has declared that anyone implicated in the post‑election violence will face strict legal action.
