Case Filed Against Sekar Babu and Kalanidhi Veerasamy
Police in Chennai have booked former minister P.K. Sekar Babu and Lok Sabha MP Dr. Kalanidhi Veerasamy, both DMK leaders, for allegedly disrupting police work during protests linked to the arrest of Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi.
The Veppery police registered the case after a dispute at the Chennai Police Commissioner's office. The former minister had reportedly been taken to that office after his arrest.
The charges include unlawful assembly and obstructing government staff from performing their official duties.
The protests spread across several parts of the city as Anbil Mahesh was moved between locations for a medical examination and court proceedings. Party workers gathered at the Commissioner's office, the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and the court premises.
When news spread that Anbil Mahesh had been brought to the Commissioner's office, Sekar Babu and other DMK members went there. Their presence led to a clash of words with police personnel stationed at the site.
During the sharp exchange, Sekar Babu reportedly questioned the conduct of the police and asked, “Are you acting as a mediator?” The remark increased friction between party workers and officers. Veerasamy was also said to have joined the dispute along with other DMK leaders.
Following this, Veppery police moved against both leaders over the alleged obstruction of police personnel.
At the hospital and court complex, some party members allegedly tried to stop police vehicles that were transporting the former minister. These events, occurring as Anbil Mahesh was taken to different locations, added to the strain of the day.
The case against Sekar Babu and Veerasamy concerns their alleged conduct during the protests. The case against Anbil Mahesh relates to alleged financial misconduct during his tenure as school education minister, when he was reportedly involved in irregularities worth Rs 400 crore under the previous DMK government. He was arrested in that matter and later sent to judicial custody around midnight after being produced in court.
There is no reported response from Sekar Babu or Veerasamy to the allegations so far.
