Captive and Commercial Coal Mines Boost FY Production Ahead of Targets
In a statement issued on August 3, the Ministry of Coal reported that the combined output of captive and commercial coal mines rose to 14.78 MT in July, a 9.6% increase from the previous year. The rise helped domestic coal availability reach 17.49 MT for the month.
The cumulative production for the current financial year (April‑July) now stands at 63.16 MT, surpassing last year's figure of 59.42 MT by 6.2%. Correspondingly, the total coal supplied during the same period has grown to 70.14 MT, up 5.8% from 66.02 MT recorded a year earlier.
The ministry attributed the gains to enhanced operational efficiency, higher extraction rates and the optimal use of mining capacities. It added that a steady increase in domestic output will lower dependence on imported coal, improve the supply chain's resilience and support India’s goal of self‑reliance in critical energy and industrial raw materials.
