Calls for Independent Inquiry as Doubts Rise Over Atik Ahmed Family Tragedy

Mumbai, 9 August – Abu Azmi, a Socialist Party lawmaker, publicly demanded an independent inquiry into the death of Aban, the late son of Atik Ahmed, who died under police custody. Azmi highlighted that the circumstances surrounding the incident do not inspire confidence that justice is being served.

He argued that the rule of law must operate without discrimination or interference, and only a transparent, impartial probe can bring the facts to light and restore faith among citizens. Azmi criticized the current approach, stating that reliance on the courts alone has not yielded satisfactory outcomes.

Addressing concerns about the safety of the surviving family members, Azmi said no definitive answers can be given at this time, and that only a thorough investigation by a reputable central agency can dispel doubts and ensure accountability.
