Call for Diplomatic Intervention as Canada’s PGWP Amendments Impact Hundreds of Indian Learners

Chandigarh, July 31 — Sunil Jakhad, who previously led the Punjab BJP, has demanded immediate diplomatic action after Canada announced revisions to its Post‑Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) scheme. He warned that the new criteria are prompting a wave of anxiety among Indian students, many of whom had already committed to Canadian institutions under the former policy.

Jakhad pointed out that the students and their families have invested millions of rupees and years of planning based on the earlier framework. The unexpected rule change now casts doubt on their professional prospects and could force them to reconsider their study plans.

He appealed to the Ministry of External Affairs to raise the issue with Ottawa, seeking a mutually acceptable solution that prevents undue hardship for Indian nationals pursuing higher education overseas.
