Breaking Patriarchal Barriers: Saraswati Devi’s Musical Legacy

Saraswati Devi’s career spanned more than three decades, ending in 1961. She was famed for exhaustive rehearsals, often spending hours training non‑singer actors and actresses to deliver convincing vocal performances. Her repertoire includes hits like "Ban Ke Chidiya" from "Achhut Kanya," "Man Bawaan Lo Sawan Jaya Re" (Bandhan, 1940), and "Chal Chal Re Naujawan" (Bandhan). She also recorded four songs for the 1939 film "Navjeevan" with celebrated singer‑actor Hansa Wadkar. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, she introduced instruments such as sitar, mandolin, and dilruba to film scores, helping shape the sonic identity of early Bollywood.
