Why Borrowed Words Strengthen Hindi, According to Anant Vijay

Anant Vijay argued that the presence of loanwords in Hindi should be seen as a sign of vitality rather than erosion. He explained that languages worldwide evolve by adopting foreign terms to describe new concepts, technologies and cultural shifts. In Hindi, words such as computer, internet, mobile and mouse have become commonplace, and attempts to replace them with artificially created equivalents often create confusion. Vijay stressed that the core function of any language is to convey ideas efficiently; when a borrowed term is widely understood, it deserves a place in the language regardless of its origin. He called for a pragmatic approach that recognises “familiar” versus “unfamiliar” words instead of labeling any foreign‑derived term as impure.
