Bokaro Plant Gates Closed as Protesters Warn of Production Halt
In a decisive move, protesters at the Bokaro Steel Plant sealed off Gate No. 9 and 10, effectively shutting down access to a major industrial hub in Jharkhand. The demonstrators, representing displaced families, have been pressing for permanent recruitment of 1,500 trained apprentices and a transparent employment framework.
They have issued a stern warning that failure to meet their demands will lead to the closure of additional gates and could force a complete halt of plant operations. The protest, led by the Displaced Youth Struggle Front, also seeks the revival of reserved quotas for fourth‑category positions.
Arun Kumar Mahato accused plant management of neglecting the grievances of families who contributed land for the plant's establishment. Sunil Kumar added that promises made over the past eighteen months have not translated into tangible hiring decisions, leaving the apprentices stuck in a cycle of temporary contracts.
Security officials have expressed concern that the unrest may jeopardise production across various units, from the coke oven to the CRM. Consequently, three security posts have been deployed around the two‑tank garden to monitor the situation.
Medical care has become necessary for several hunger strikers whose health deteriorated, prompting their transfer to the district hospital. The stalemate persists, with both sides unwilling to compromise, putting the plant's productivity and safety at risk.
