Board to review petition of Sabri Mala’s appointed tantri amid ongoing investigations

The Tiruvannamalai Devaswom Board is set to examine a formal plea submitted by Kandararu Rajivaru, the nominated chief priest of Sabri Mala Temple. In his correspondence, Rajivaru invoked serious health concerns and requested that the board refrain from installing him this year, urging the appointment of his son in his stead.

Sabri Mala’s tantric position is traditionally hereditary, belonging exclusively to the Thazhamon Madom lineage. The priestly role is pivotal for performing the temple’s core ceremonies, especially as the much‑anticipated pilgrim trek slated for November approaches.

Rajivaru’s background has been marred by allegations of missing gold jewelry and other valuables from the shrine. Both the Special Investigation Team and the Enforcement Directorate interrogated him, and he was briefly detained before being granted bail. The investigations are currently in their concluding phase.

According to board officials, no immediate resolution will be made. The board is awaiting the SIT’s final charge sheet and the outcome of the pending high‑court case before confirming any appointment. The decision will have far‑reaching implications for the upcoming religious festivities.
